Booth spaces available at Polk County Picnic
The Polk County Picnic is set for its ninth annual run Saturday, Sept. 12, on the Bolivar square. Blasted by the heat, crowd shows at sundown
While the sun’s rays blazed over J.R. Martin Park Friday evening, those who had ventured out early sought relief from the heat under the shade trees, while very little action went on elsewhere around the park. A few kids took part in games and rides that were in the shade, the hot dog eating contest was held, and the band played. Extreme heat greets holiday festivities
Spectators watched the fireworks display from the back of a pickup truck in the city park. At least 200 people attended the celebration, most were lounging on blankets or lawn chairs in the park, while others sat in air-conditioned vehicles in the parking lot. The day’s activities started in the city park with food, music and activities for children. The parade began at 5 p.m., winding from the city park through town, ending again at the park. Spectators along the parade route filled the pockets of shade, venturing into the sunshine only to gather candy tossed from the floats.
