Rains do little to dampen the spirits of Polk County Farmers' Market vendors
The season's considerable rains challenge vendors at the Polk County Farmers' Market to experiment with new ways to ensure produce. In addition to bringing in late crops this year, growers have had to change their plans for planting.

Dave Dickerson of Aldrich was a fierce cycling competitor before a motorcycle accident that seriously injured in his right leg, forcing him to learn how to walk again, let alone ride a bicycle. Five years later, though, he got back on a bicycle, and he will be competing in the 5-kilometer time trial event at the 2009 National Senior Games in San Francisco.

City plans street projects
City of Bolivar street crews started work Tuesday preparing streets in the Russell Addition in the northwest part of the city for an asphalt overlay later this summer. Bids for this year’s overlay projects will be opened July 18.
City of Bolivar street crews started work Tuesday preparing streets in the Russell Addition in the northwest part of the city for an asphalt overlay later this summer. Bids for this year’s overlay projects will be opened July 18.
A few Bolivar streets will receive a fresh coat of asphalt this summer, but just how much overlay work is completed will depend on how much higher gas prices have affected the price of the oil used in asphalt, according to Public Works Director Rick Shuler.

Missouri Gas Utility Inc. is seeking a franchise agreement to run a natural gas pipeline through Bolivar that will connect with Lake of the Ozarks and Sedalia.

A Bruner woman is facing two felony counts of possession and growing marijuana after Christian County deputies discovered 19 plants and more than 35 processed grams on her property during a consented search June 30.

Exchange student embraces a new world of experiences
If Makoto Ouchi was to assemble a visual scrapbook of her year as an exchange student in Marshfield, many of the memories would probably revolve around music. Not only did she place second in this spring’s Marshfield High School talent show (above), but she lettered in band and was active in choir.

For many in Marshfield and the Ozarks, the wooded hills and valleys have been home for as long as they can remember. But for Makoto Ouchi, the Ozarks were a foreign experience. However, she embraced the year as an exchange student with gusto, participating in many school and community activities.
